Hobbies, leadership, and transferable skills

Personal interests and extracurricular roles that show who I am beyond coursework, with transferable skills made explicit.

Swimming

Three mornings a week. Lap swimming for fun and exercise keeps me structured between long project weeks.

Transferable skillsSwimming is a fixed morning routine: you show up on schedule whether or not you feel like it, and that same rhythm helps me hit draft deadlines or ship a feature on someone else's timeline.

Video games

Forza Horizon 4 and Watch Dogs. Open-world games where reading the map, planning ahead, and reacting on the fly are practice in clarity under pressure.

Transferable skillsPlanning ahead in Forza Horizon 4 or a Watch Dogs mission is the same muscle as structuring a document: you need to know the destination before you start explaining every turn.

Films

Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. Studying how a director controls pacing taught me that structure carries meaning before dialogue does.

Transferable skillsA film teaches you that readers arrive with expectations about rhythm. The executive summary in my report exists for the same reason Nolan cross-cuts between timelines: some audiences need the conclusion before the evidence, or they stop watching.

Outside coursework, the same communication skills show up in different contexts: coordinating events, translating feedback, and navigating two languages at home.

  • Operations Lead

    GDG on Campus

Coordinated six speakers and a case competition for the first flagship event at Google's Toronto HQ.

Transferable skillsRunning a flagship event is stakeholder communication under a fixed date: speakers need briefs, volunteers need tasks, and sponsors need a story that survives being forwarded to someone who was not in the room.

  • Class Representative

    MATH 1013 · MATH/EECS 1028 · PHYS 1801

Translated student concerns into actionable feedback for instructors, communication in both directions.

Transferable skillsRepresenting a class means writing feedback an instructor can act on without re-interviewing thirty people, which is the same translation problem as turning peer review into Appendix A.

  • Peer-led review session

    Calculus

Led a peer calculus review session. Teaching is the test of whether you actually understand something.

Transferable skillsTeaching forces you to find the step where a smart listener gets lost. If you cannot explain the jump, you do not yet understand the idea well enough to document it.

  • Event Coordinator

    Iranian Student Association

Planned and ran community events bridging cultural programming with campus logistics.

Transferable skillsCommunity events sit between two audiences with different assumptions about formality and language. Planning them is practice in writing for people who share a goal but not the same register.

A deployed product I built in 2025–2026 — concurrent Go scrapers, a Next.js frontend, and consumer-facing copy that answers whether a listing is fairly priced.

It is also showcased as my external built piece and named in my reflection when describing how I learned to lead with audience value instead of implementation detail.

Language thread

Growing up bilingual in Persian and English, I switch registers constantly: formal with instructors, direct with teammates, careful with family. That is audience adaptation before I had the vocabulary for it.
